David Ortiz hit a three run home run for his seventeenth of the year and John Lackey pitched 7 innings of one run baseball to pick up his 9th win of the season as the Red Sox beat the Rays to move one game behind the Yankees in the AL East.
On April 30th, David Ortiz had one home run and was sporting a .524 OPS. Since then, he has hit 16 home runs to raise his OPS to .898.
On April 30th, the Rays were 17-6 and were already leading the AL East by 1.5 games and many people were calling them the biggest World Series threat.
I fall prey to this too, so I’m certainly not without blame, but it’s important to remember that baseball is a marathon and not a sprint. If this was football, everyone would already be essentially locked up in their playoff spots. And that’s boring. This way is much better.
