While some pitchers, like RA Dickey, use a war-like Pitch Face to intimidate their opponents, players like, oh, Jeff Karstens for example, use a face similar to the one from the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark to frighten and browbeat their opponents.
Karstens used that face quite well last night, posting this line: 9 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K. Oh yeah, he also only needed 83 pitches to dispatch the Astros. That’s the first complete game with less than 90 pitches since Jaime Garcia needed 89 pitches to shutout the Giants on August 22nd of last year. Something tells me that the Astros won’t be winning the World Series this year.
The victory lowered Jeff Karstens’ ERA to 2.34, and if he finds a way to extend his deal with Mephisto, he could even steal a few third place Cy Young votes. Oh yeah, the Pirates are in first place. Baseball!
