I mentioned this in the trades recap, but I felt it would be disrespectful not to give Matt Stairs his proper due. Today, the Washington Nationals released Matt Stairs for Jonny Gomes.
Who cares that the 43-year-old Stairs was only hitting .154/.257/.169 with zero home runs and couldn’t play the field. Matt Stairs is goodness personified, he plays the game with such elegance, such grace, such joie de vivre, that it is criminal that he is currently without a job. And in this economic climate, who knows if there is another job waiting for him.
In 19 years, we have seen Stairs in 13 different uniforms, going from husky, to fat, back to husky and he has grown all sorts of facial hair and mullets in that time span. Stairs has hit 265 career home runs and holds the record for most pinch-hit home runs. The most important thing he has, though, is my heart.
Also, just spitballin’ here, but maybe the Yuma Scorpions could sign him and field the most dinger-ific team in Independent Baseball?
