Your 2011 Heart and Hustle Award Finalists
With a name that sounds like the punchline to a Fire Joe Morgan joke, the Major League Baseball Players Association have released the finalists for the 2011 Heart and Hustle Award, with representative from each team selected. The winner will chosen on November 3rd.
Here are a few names from the list, hardly surprises. Notice that they are either undersized, utility players, just not very good, or all of the above:
- Dustin Pedroia
- Juan Pierre
- Ben Zobrist
- Darwin Barney
- Miguel Cairo
- Jamey Carroll
- Chris Denorfia
That’s a veritable who’s who of players who know how to respect the game and do the little things.
Sure, there are a few Ryan Brauns and Jose Reyes thrown on the list, but those players are like Toy Story 3’s Best Picture nomination—it’s mostly for show. Although, considering that Roy Halladay and Albert Pujols have won the last two years, I have to assume that today’s players are relying too heavily on WAR and VORP than the tried and true values of consistency, grit, and battlefield valor.
