And the Rangers get him for the low, low price of Evan Reed and Omar Poveda. Poveda is out for the season due to Tommy John surgery and Reed is a 24 year old reliever who is just getting his first taste of AAA. Poveda ranked 15th on John Sickels 2010 Rangers prospect list while Reed wasn’t listed.
Which isn’t to say that it’s a bad haul for the Marlins. After a hot first month, Cantu has fallen back hard to the earth and the Marlins have a bounty of riches waiting for places to play in the minors. And the Rangers got a bench bat who can be pushed into starting duty if necessary which will be nice to have come October.
A fairly minor deal, especially in light of the Roy Oswalt deal, that will look brilliant if Cantu hits a game winning home run in the ALCS.
