The amazing Ubaldo performed his greatest feat: reanimating a dead Rockies offense in their 9-3 decimation of the Pirates. Ubaldo’s 7 innings of 4 hit, 1 run baseball nothing new. In fact, against an offense like Pittsburgh’s, without McCutchen or Milledge in the lineup, it should be expected. But the trio of Dexter Fowler, Clint Barmes and Carlos Gonzalez combining to 7-15 with 6 RBI against the de facto ace of the Pirates in Maholm (who’s ERA is very un-ace like at 4.52) was a crucial element missing during the Rockies 8 game losing streak coming into today.
Going into the All Star break I thought the Rockies were primed to explode on one of their legendary runs to take the division. They’re now 9 games back and even Ubaldo the Amazing may not be able to make the three teams in front of them disappear.
