Joe Saunders, wearing #34, presumably honor of Nick Adenhart, made his D-Backs debut with 7 innings of two run ball. Though the D Backs probably overpaid in acquiring Saunders they must have really enjoyed a pitcher who could go seven innings without walking a single batter. Of course, that doesn’t help much when the offense could muster only two runs in 11 innings, thanks to Miguel Montero’s sixth inning two-run homer.
Wilson Valdez’s RBI single in the 11th inning sealed the win for the Phillies, who are now 2.5 games back of Atlanta, having won eight of their last ten games. Now that Roy Oswalt has joined the fold, the two Easts should have the best stretch runs.
