The Red Sox scored four in the ninth inning thanks to a David Ortiz grand slam and had runners on first and second when Jose Valverde finally shut the door for good in the Tigers victory. Jhonny Peralta also hit the first two home runs of his Tigers career, making the trade look very smart for GM Dave Dombrowski.
It was one of the worst outings of Valverde’s career as he surrendered four runs on two hits and five walks in the inning while needing 61 pitches to complete the frame. To put that in perspective, Valverde hadn’t thrown more than 24 pitches in any game this season, and his career high was 48 pitches in 2004. In fact, Valverde hadn’t thrown more than 40 pitches since 2005. Hopefully Jim Leyland will give him a few days off before calling on him again.
