David Price’s World Beater Heater

Who Owns David Price?

In the Rays 12-0 decimation of the Blue Jays yesterday, kicked off by Desmond Jenning’s game-opening home run, David Price owned the Toronto Blue Jays. That may be a tired phrase, but it’s startlingly accurate.

Price set the Rays record with 14 strikeouts, doing it only seven innings. During that time he allowed three hits, walked two, with nary a run scoring against him. But just look at his strike zone plot as provided by Brooks Baseball

Price hammered the strike zone and when the Blue Jays weren’t watching the ball soar by for a called strike, they were flailing wildly at the ball. Of Price’s 111 pitches, 75 were strikes and 17 of those came by batters swinging and coming up empty. Price’s fastball, averaging 95 mph, was even better, accounting for 10 of Price’s strikeouts and extending his Major League lead for fastball-related strikeouts to 128, 30 more than the second place Bartolo Colon. Yes, Bartolo Colon has the second most strikeouts via the fastball this season. I’m as shocked as you are.

The Blue Jays didn’t do much better once Price exited, striking out four more times against Brandon Gomes and Cesar Ramos to end the day with 18 strikeouts. Mike McCoy, the utilityman with the heart of gold, was the only to avoid going down on strikes, even managing to draw three walks, proving that the world does reward the good from time to time.
