R.A. Dickey Finally Flutters His Way Into the Win Column

After five straight winless starts, all of them “Quality” outings, mind you, R.A. Dickey finally emerged victorious against the Marlins earlier today. During that time, Dickey pitched 32.1 innings, allowing 13 runs, good for a 3.62 ERA, yet the Mets could never put enough runs on the board to hand the veteran a win. But today, all of that changed as Dickey went seven scoreless innings against the Marlins, giving up seven hits, one walk, and striking out six. The Mets, as is their wont, scored only two runs, but [erhaps now the hounds of hell that have been circling Citi Field will leave, their tearful howls of support no longer neede.d

If you want a picture of consistency, Dickey is it. In 27 games, 26 of them starts, last year, Dickey went 174.1 innings. This season, in 28 games with 27 of them being starts, Dickey has now gone 174 innings. In Dickey’s last seventeen starts, he’s pitched less than six innings twice, averaging over 6-and-two-thirds innings per outing, while never allowing more than four runs in an outing. I was among those that thought that Dickey would not be able to live up to his surprise 2010, but with a solid knuckler in his arsenal, Dickey could easily be a fine member of the Mets rotation for another five-to-twenty five years. He’s a lot like a serial arsonist in that way.
