Dirk Hayhurst Is Released
The Garfoose is free! One day (perhaps even in the same day if you want to look at timestamps) after writing that he could never love baseball for it “will never love me back,” the Tampa Bay Rays released Dirk Hayhurst.
Today, Hayhurst pens:
“I’d like the reader to know that while getting released is not the best thing that’s ever happened to me, it’s not the worst. Baseball is a wonderful game, but a merciless business. A player at the professional level knows a release can come at any time, and at least I had the luxury of knowing it could possibly happen—after all, a garden variety, right handed pitcher can only spend so many days on the DL in the minors without making his employers wonder what they’re paying him for (certainly not to write blog entries). I’m thankful I have my health during this departure, and that I can pitch again if my services are called upon.”
Hayhurst had a 4.12 ERA in 11 starts with the Durham Bulls, so should he be healthy, we can only hope another team will come calling. Baseball’s not exactly known for their writers and thinkers and it would be a shame for Hayhurst’s ride to end here.
