Last Minute Moves

With August 31st soon to leave us behind, plunging us into the hell that is September*, teams are adding the final players to their roster so they’ll be eligible come the postseason.

My favorite part is that these are all friendship deals; players moving from teams not in contention to those that may need a spare part come the beginning of October, all with the hope that when the situations are reversed, your trade partner will remember you fondly.

A few of those moves:

Braves Acquire Matt Diaz - There was a time that Matt Diaz hit for average and power while absolutely crushing lefthanders. While he still can give them some fits, he mostly hits people, human people

Braves Also Acquire Jack Wilson - Rumor has it that when the Braves picked up Diaz from the Pirates, they also asked for Jack Wilson. When told that Wilson hadn’t played for the team in a few years, Frank Wren paused for a second, whispered “is that true?” to his assistant GM, and then laughed, saying, “Yeah, we knew that. Psyche!”

Rangers Snag Mike Gonzalez - The Rangers have apparently decided that they don’t need starting pitchers anymore as they can now go their bullpens from the beginning of any game and have confidence in their performance.

Rangers Get Matt Treanor Back - I really hope Matt Treanor gets his own shoe deal, that way kids all around the world can finally buy the Matt Treanor CrossTrainer. The shoe comes with a guarantee that you’ll hit 30% worse than your peers. That’s unfair to Treanor, who as a catcher, only needs to be able to hold the bat up during his plate appearances do be worth a spot on a Major League roster.

Phillies Add John Bowker - Come October, a lot of teams are going to be kicking themselves that they didn’t get on the Bowker train earlier.

*Seriously, is September good for anything? What do you celebrate unless you’re a cruel elementary school teacher?
